About Garden Cafe

Garden Cafe, located at 20390 Lake Chabot Rd, Castro Valley, CA 94546, is a distinguished establishment specializing in authentic Hong Kong-style dining as a cha chaan teng, or Hong Kong-style cafe, and Chinese restaurant. This unique culinary venue offers a vibrant fusion of Eastern and Western flavors, reflecting the eclectic and affordable menu traditions that define cha chaan teng culture. Known for serving a wide range of dishes—from classic Hong Kong staples like wonton noodles and curry to Western-inspired items such as Hong Kong-style French toast—Garden Cafe provides a diverse gastronomic experience that appeals to both casual diners and aficionados of Hong Kong cuisine. The cafe’s phone contact is +1 510-280-8188, welcoming patrons to explore its rich menu and warm atmosphere.

The essence of Garden Cafe lies in its ability to capture the bustling, lively spirit of Hong Kong’s tea restaurants, where the name cha chaan teng literally means “tea restaurant.” Unlike traditional Chinese teahouses, these cafes serve inexpensive black tea, known as “clear tea,” immediately upon seating, a custom that enhances the dining experience and connects guests to authentic Hong Kong dining rituals. Garden Cafe embraces this tradition, offering not only tea but also a broad spectrum of dishes that blend Western and Chinese culinary influences, a hallmark of cha chaan tengs that originated in Hong Kong during the mid-20th century. This fusion reflects Hong Kong’s history as a cosmopolitan trading hub, where diverse cultures and tastes converge, making Garden Cafe a place where heritage and innovation meet.

The menu at Garden Cafe is thoughtfully curated to balance tradition with contemporary tastes. Patrons can expect to find beloved classics such as borscht soup, a tomato-based beef and cabbage broth, and Swiss chicken wings, which are slowly poached in a sweet soy sauce—a dish with a charming backstory tied to Hong Kong’s colonial past. Alongside these, the cafe offers a variety of rice plates, noodle dishes, sandwiches, and seasonal specials that keep the culinary offerings fresh and engaging. This dynamic approach to menu development ensures that both new visitors and regular customers enjoy a vibrant and evolving dining experience, while the cafe remains true to the authentic flavors and comforting familiarity of Hong Kong-style cafes.

Beyond the food, Garden Cafe creates an immersive atmosphere that transports guests to the lively streets of Hong Kong. The decor and ambiance are designed to evoke the warmth and hospitality characteristic of cha chaan tengs, where the experience is as important as the cuisine. The staff are trained to provide friendly, attentive service that embodies the welcoming spirit of Hong Kong cafes, making every visit memorable. This dedication to customer experience is complemented by occasional themed events and specials that celebrate Hong Kong culture and cuisine, fostering a sense of community and connection among patrons.

Garden Cafe also recognizes the growing importance of coffee culture within Hong Kong-style cafes. While traditionally focused on tea, many cha chaan tengs have embraced coffee as part of their beverage offerings, reflecting Hong Kong’s evolving tastes and the influence of specialty coffee trends. Garden Cafe incorporates this trend by offering a selection of coffee drinks alongside its traditional teas, catering to diverse preferences and enhancing the overall dining experience.

In summary, Garden Cafe stands as a vibrant and authentic representation of Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng tradition in Castro Valley, California. It offers a unique blend of cultural heritage, diverse menu options, and a welcoming atmosphere that invites guests to enjoy the rich flavors and convivial spirit of a true Hong Kong-style cafe. Whether seeking a comforting meal, a taste of Hong Kong’s culinary history, or a cozy place to gather, Garden Cafe delivers an experience that resonates with both the local community and lovers of Chinese cuisine.

A good little Hong Kong style Café… They have the French toast with peanut butter and condensed milk, the coffee/tea combo, great egg sandwiches and other good HK cafe stuff! The portions are quite large for the French toast so one should feed two people at least. Prices are a little high, but it’s good if you like the style of food .

Wow! So glad there’s a late night cafe vibe place here in Castro Valley. I really enjoyed the quality of their food. I got wonton soup and clams and mochi pancake. I’m a huge fan of the free tea, it makes it so cozy 🥹 I wasn’t feeling well, and this place healed up my soul and health. Staff were kind and attentive too. Highly recommend!

Enjoyed some delicious beef congee and pork/preserved egg congee along with the house waffle. The food was delicious. The waffle is made with rice flour and was scrumptious. Pour a little condensed milk and maple syrup on it and munch away. The beef was very tender and flavorful. We were the only ones in there just after they opened at 810am on a Saturday. So if you want to avoid the crowd, come early.

Love this place. It is was crowded at dinner time. We try to find place for dinner and our friend recommended this. It was a good choice. It serves Hongkong style dishes and street food. The menu is massive for food and drink. We ordered stir fry on choy, baked black pepper porkchop over rice, hainamese chicken rice and seafood pand fry noodle. All are yummy. It is just it takes a while for our order to arrive. One dishes which suppose to be the simplest and quick to prepare cakes the last. Will visit again and try other dishes. Price is reasonable. One negative side is the noise. People sit Two table close to us talked so loud. It is just some customer don't have manner and seems the place doesn't have enough sound suppression.
